Proven principles to promote healing
At Gentle Path, we recognize the value of integrating the 12-Step approach into the treatment process. These tried-and-true 12 Steps include a variety of broadly applicable principles that can help patients modify negative behaviors, prevent relapse, and maintain lasting recovery.
Our approach to the 12 Steps focuses on the philosophy of universality, the theory that no one is alone in the world. As patients are guided and supported by the staff, they can let go of shame and guilt – underlying factors behind all addictive behaviors. During meetings, patients are encouraged to share their thoughts, allowing them to feel heard and speak their minds. As patients release their emotions in the safe environment fostered by the group, they can process their thoughts and experiences. Patients can then realize their mistakes and recognize the situations that led them to addiction.
We incorporate the 12-Step process by having patients complete their first step during treatment and continue to attend 12-Step meetings throughout the duration of therapy. When patients leave Gentle Path, they are directed to local 12-Step meetings in their cities. We encourage them to find a home group, obtain a sponsor, and complete personal work as a way to help prevent relapse, teach better self-control, and reinforce lasting healing.
Gentle Path is a safe, nurturing community composed of peers where your journey of recovery will include not just dealing with outward behaviors but examining the underlying causes. The goal is to gain the courage to face difficult issues (including grief and loss), heal from emotional trauma, and become accountable for your feelings, behaviors, and recovery.
Taking that first step is hard, but there’s a new life of health and hope just waiting for you. The next chapter of your life can begin now, but only you can change your story.
